Chennai is preparing to host a groundbreaking event — the FIA Formula 4 Indian Championship and Indian Racing League (IRL) night street races, marking India’s first-ever night street racing experience on December 9 and 10.
The Tamil Nadu government is investing Rs 42 crore in this historic event, signified by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) inked between the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) and Racing Promotions Private Limited (RPPL), the race promoters, back in August.
This unique racing spectacle is set to unfold on a newly designed 3.7-kilometer circuit, making it the longest street circuit in India, encircling the iconic Island Grounds.
The upcoming night street races in Chennai are set to highlight the Formula 4 Indian Championship, bringing together 12 adept drivers representing 6 teams worldwide. Alongside this, the Indian Racing League will feature 24 drivers and 12 cars, including six talented female racers distributed across six teams.
These thrilling competitions will mark the fourth rounds for both Formula 4 and IRL at the Chennai Formula Racing Circuit street races. Notably, the night street race in Chennai will serve as the concluding round for IRL, while the Formula 4 series will wrap up on December 17 at the Madras International Circuit (MIC) in the city.
